- Recent evolution of the current youth sports culture has pushed an alarming number of kids to opposite ends of the physical activity spectrum. At one extreme are the over-trained, burned-out, and specialized youth at risk for early retirement from sports. On the other end are youth who, for several potential reasons, are deficient, or completely lacking, participation in physical activity. Both youth populations are at risk for many health consequences and need an innovative solution.
- The construct of physical literacy offers a holistic, systems-oriented approach to physical activity promotion, spurring physical literacy development initiatives around the globe. Physical therapists are aptly suited and perhaps responsible for fostering physical literacy development among young athletes, particularly among those at the highest risk of physical literacy disruption following injury or experiencing pain during activity.
- This course will provide an overview of physical literacy, discuss current research related to physical literacy, and equip attendees with the knowledge and confidence to promote physical literacy development for all youth, regardless of athletic ability or activity level.
