Description
The aim of this systematic review was to examine the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals competing in collegiate women’s sport since the passage of Title IX. A search across four databases generated 11 articles published within a 24-year range (1997-2021), none of which addressed experiences of transgender or nonbinary athletes. Article analysis revealed LGBTQ+ athletes’ experiences of stereotypes, discrimination, climates of exclusion, factors which influenced LGBTQ+ athletes to reveal their sexual orientation identities within and outside of sport, and climates of inclusion. These findings portray the one-dimensional nature of Title IX in its sole focus on discrimination ‘on the basis of sex’, neglecting the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and intersectional nature of institutions to which Title IX applies (Staurowsky et al., 2022). Findings reiterate a need to extend the examination of LGBTQ+ experiences in collegiate women’s sport to cultivate more nuanced understandings of these experiences and inform policy and educational initiatives to cultivate safer spaces in athletics for all stakeholders.
