Discuss clinical examples of collaboration with primary care and orthopedic physicians and answer questions from the audience.
Panel will consist physical therapists and team physicians from the University of Houston and the Indianapolis Colts. The moderator will be Tommy Otley (University of Miami).
Bonnie Gregory, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthoapedic sports medicine and shoulder surgeon in Houston, TX. Dr. Gregory is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), and is involved in the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, physical therapists and athletic trainers. She currently serves as team physician for the Houston Rockets, Houston Dash, University of Houston, and Foster High School.
Dr. Gregory received her undergraduate degree at the Duke University in North Carolina. She completed medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the prestigious Rush University Medical Center at Chicago, followed by a fellowship in shoulder and sports medicine at Duke University in North Carolina.
Dr. Gregory is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS), the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society, and the Forum. She is a member of several national committees within AOSSM. She has authored many scientific articles as well as textbook chapters on topics within sports medicine, and presented her work at national meetings. She is a rising leader in orthopaedics and has completed the Feagin Leadership Program at Duke University, as well as the American Orthopaedic Association C. McCollister Evart Resident Leadership Forum and Emerging Leaders Program. She also serves as Director of the Southwest Region for the Department of Orthopaedics.
Maddie Eastman is seasonal physical therapist with the Indianapolis Colts. She completed her undergraduate degree at Clemson University and following PT school did a sports residency at the University of Wisconsin. She finished up her Division 1 Fellowship with the University of Houston and Memorial Hermann in May before transitioning to the her current placement with the Colts.
Dr. Thurman Alvey is a board certified, primary care sports medicine physician. He serves as the primary care physician for the Indianapolis Colts. Dr. Alvey specializes in sports medicine, family medicine, osteopathic medicine and pain medicine. Dr. Alvey received his bachelors in biology from Franklkin College, a masters in anatomy from Indiana University, and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Alvey is active in medical education. He is an author, lecturer and researcher whose interests include injury prevention, sports nutrition, regenerative biomedicine and concussion management. Dr. Alvey is a member of the American Medical society of Sports Medicine, the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine, and of the NFL physician society. He has served on numerous councils for his professional organizations, and as the president for the Indiana Osteopathic association from 2010- 11 amid a long tenure on the associations board of directors. Dr. Alvey was a multi-sport athlete throughout high school and college.
Dr. Mackenzie Scovill is the current staff physical therapist for the Indianapolis Colts. Before obtaining her full-time position, she was the Seasonal Physical Therapy Intern for the Indianapolis Colts for the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons. Prior to joining the Indianapolis Colts, she participated in the Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine Institute Residency Program in Houston, Texas. She has also worked as a Staff Physical Therapist at S2S Functional Performance in Flower Mound, Texas, focusing on the sports-orthopedic population. She received her bachelor’s in science in Applied Physiology and Enterprise from Southern Methodist University and then went on to earn her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2016 from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. In addition to her physical therapy career, Mackenzie has succeeded as an athlete by playing Division I college soccer at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and professionally for a season in Reykjavik, Iceland before pursuing her career in physical therapy.
Tommy Otley is the physical therapist for the University of Miami men’s and women’s basketball teams. Otley also manages sports science for both programs, including overseeing team performance technology use, baseline profiling assessments and in-season athlete monitoring.
Before coming to the U Otley spent two years at Duke University. During the 2021-22 season, he worked with the Blue Devils men’s and women’s basketball programs while completing the prestigious Duke Division I Athletics Fellowship where he worked closely with both the basketball rehabilitation and performance staff, assisting the director of high performance and sports science in managing team performance data.
A residency-trained and board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy, Otley earned his doctorate in physical therapy from the University of North Georgia in 2020. He previously received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2017 from Asbury University.
Otley serves as the Practice Chair for the College and Professional Sports special interest group of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy.
